Notable facts about Horsforth

  • Horsforth (Horseford, Horseforde, Hoseforde) first appeared in the 1086 Domesday Book - its name being derived from 'horse' and 'ford'. The ford was a river crossing situated in shallow water along the River Aire used for the transportation of woollen goods to and from Pudsey, Shipley and Bradford.
  • Like Cookridge most of Horsforth village came under the control of Kirkstall Abbey.
  • Not only did Horsforth supply Kirkstall Abbey with building materials in the medieval period, it provided the stone for Scarborough seafront and sent its prized sandstone as far afield as Egypt.
  • During World War Two the £241,000 required to build the corvette HMS Aubretia was raised entirely by the people of Horsforth.
